Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog History
The Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog can trace its ancestry back to the state of Georgia, in the United States. The breed is considered to be a result of an old breeding program of PaPa Buck Lane of Rebecca, which started in the late 1800s. The program’s intention was to rescue the plantation dog of southern Georgia, that was on the brink of extinction.
It is thought that several really old bulldog breeds, including the Bulldog">Old English Bulldog and the White English Bulldog, have created the Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog. Other breeds were also involved in the breeding program, like the American Bulldog, the Mastiff, and the Old Southern Bulldog. It is also known that most of the foundation strains used during the initial breeding processes are no longer in existence today. The Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog’s breeding program was conducted by Buck Lane, who developed the first primitive specimen of the breed and called it Otto. From that point on, the breed was known as the Otto Bulldog. When PaPa Buck was killed in a train accident in 1943, the first specimen he created, had proven his loyalty and undying devotion by visiting his master’s grave constantly. Later, Buck’s granddaughter continued to further develop and to perfect the Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog.
Contrary to popular belief stating that the breed is more than 200 years old, there is no records, and documentation prior to 1979. Yet, it is thought that like other Bulldog types of breed, the Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog was also developed in the early days with the intention of driving the cattle and other livestock and to guard them and also to control the vermin population around the farms and ranches. Previously the breed was known under a lot of names, including Silver Dollar, Cowdog, Otto, and Catahoula Bulldog. However, in 1979, a group of the breed’s enthusiasts led by Lane’s granddaughter set their minds to revitalize the breed and to earn recognition for it. They gave the breed the Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog name and also have founded the Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog Association and drawn up a breed standard, which had been accepted.
This powerful breed has always remained a popular choice in the southern parts of the United States, however, the Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog is still considered a rare breed. Due to this rarity, anyone wishing to get a specimen needs to sign up for a waiting list, because just a few puppies are available every year worldwide. Despite its long and fairly complex history, none of the major kennel clubs gave the breed recognition. There is an advantage of this rarity and the increasing interest for the breed, this way, the Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog is more likely to receive registration soon. Mrs. Lane, the granddaughter from whom the breed received its true and final form, became an ARF Certified Breeder and passed away in 2001.
