Alopekis History

The Alopekis is a fox-like ancient dog breed, that finds its ancestry in Greece, more specifically in the region Serres. The breed’s origin dates back to before its discovery in 1922. The name Alopekis translates to “small fox” in Greek, referring to the remarkable resemblance between the breed and foxes. The Alopekis is characterized by a long body, muzzle with a deep and broad base, a wedge-shaped head, triangular ears, strong knees, large eyes, and broad nose.

In spite of the late discovery of the breed, it is presumably a really old one. Ancient writers including Aristotle, Aristophanes, and Xenophon all mentioned or depicted this breed. Moreover, several archaeological findings such as statues, sculptures, tombs, and cravings have presented this fox-like dog. For the reason that multiple pre-historic artifacts discovered in Asketario, Raphina, and Thessaly portray the Alopekis, it is widely believed that the breed evolved naturally from the ancient dogs living during the proto-Hellenic period. Thus, the Alopekis is considered to be a landrace that is most likely descended from a type of small dog breed commonly appearing in the Baltic peninsula. However, according to some experts, the breed actually can trace its origins back to the eastern pye dogs. Moreover, the dog bones found around the sites of Neolithic settlements like Sitagroi and Sesklo, are indicating that the Alopekis are among the oldest dog breeds indigenous to Europe.

The Alopekis was very common all around Greece in the 20th century. The breed’s role was to exterminate small vermin as well as to protect the domestic ducks, chicken, and other livestock from foxes. The breed was presumably used also for controlling aggressive bulls in training sessions and games of bull-leaping.

Unfortunately by the end of the 20th century, the Alopekis’s population numbers started to decrease, due to the fact that more popular breeds were imported to Greece, and the mass spaying and sterilization of dogs in some regions of Greece reduced the number of both stray, mixed and pure Alopekis dogs. Around the turn of the 21st century, the breed got to the verge of extinction. Since then, breed enthusiasts and other breeders are constantly making an effort with the intention of revitalizing and preserving the Alopekis.
