Armenian Gampr dog History
The Armenian Gampr is an ancient breed, whose origins can be traced back to at least 15,000 years. This breed has been depicted in ancient petroglyphs in the Syuniq and Geghama Mountains of Armenia and its development over time until about 1000BC. The breed is a giant-sized landrace dog, which means that it is prone to higher variability in appearance and structure than standardized breeds, and in many cases, landrace breeds are genetically healthier.
Moreover, Armenian Highland is one of the cradles of civilization. Since times immemorial, men used various animals, dogs, cats, goats, sheep, horses, and donkeys. However, the Armenian Gampr was different from all these animals, as it accompanied the man as he bred stock, hunted, cultivated the land, built settlements, and created objects of art. The Gampr is a unique breed created through centuries of patience, targeted breeding, natural selection, and in relative isolation from the rest of the world. The Armenian Gampr is a working breed used for many jobs such as herding, hunting, fighting in the war dog, and rescuing. As Armenians traveled through the Caucasus, Persia, Central Asia, and Europe, they brought their guardian dogs with them. It is said that Tigran the Great King was particularly fond of the Gampr, and kept them near him at all times.
Moreover, according to ancient Armenian mythology, there were dog-like creatures who came from the sky to lick, with its healing tongue, the wounds of those who were killed or hurt in the battle. Many people still believe that the Gampr descended from these animals. We can clearly see the importance of dog worship among Armenian people. Armenian myths and folklore praise the unrivaled courage, strength, wisdom, and loyal character of the Gampr. They were also buried with their masters, the body of the deas was in the center and the dogs were placed on either side facing him.
Furthermore, the first attempts at breeding the Armenian Gampr according to modern methods started at the beginning of the 20th century, in the Soviet Union. Breeders joined all varieties of the breed into one group and determined the breeding policy. They were sold to the so-called Red Star breeding program, which developed the Caucasian Obcharka by infusing the original genetics of the Gampr with some other breeds. There were also failed attempts to create new Soviet breeds, by crossing the Gampr with Saint Bernard, the German Shepherd, the Newfoundland, and the Great Dane. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Armenia rallied around the remaining gene pool and began the process of giving an official name to the breed that had been within their culture for millennia. Following the independence of Armenia in 1991, the first breed standard was drawn up and in 2011 the breed was recognized by the International Kennel Union, an organization based in Moscow.
