Bruno Jura Hound History

The Bruno Jura Hound can trace its ancestry back to the Middle Ages, to the Jura Mountains, from the border which is splitting France and Switzerland. According to common belief, the Bruno Jura Hound is a descendant of the Bruno French Chien Saint Hubert Dog. Moreover, some mosaic evidence has been found in Avenches, Switzerland which confirms that the breed was present and existing during Roman times.

The breed’s development process is quite unclear because of the lack of documentation and records from that time. Consequently, it is presumed that the Bruno Jura Hound emerged naturally, with little human interference, from the local hound breeds. The Bruno Jura Hound is a scent-hound breed, which was mostly bred and used for hunting hare, fox, and even deer. The breed was well-known and renewed after their scenting abilities. The dogs were capable to track the slightest hint of a scent over the rough terrain, in different climatic conditions that the Jura Mountains offered. It is believed – although not confirmed by any genetic studies – that the Bruno Jura Hound also have a relationship with the Bloodhound, because of their similarly good scenting skills. The breed quickly became popular among the local hunting community, because the dogs were remarkably fast and swift on their feet, surrounded by the wilderness of the Jura Mountains.

According to the breed classification within the hound group in the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale), there are four types of Swiss hound breeds. The Bruno Jura Hound, the Lucerne Hound, the Schwyz, and the Bernese. These breeds are very much alike, yet the Bruno Jura Hound is quite unique among them too. This breed has the most hunting drive and motivation to be on the ground with their hunter companions. For that reason, the breed is not considered to be a good family companion. Because of their strong prey drive, the Bruno Jura Hound needs specialized training and socialization from a very young age if wants to be kept as a pet. Despite that, the breed can be extremely loyal and devoted to their owners, they can be great hiking partners.

Nowadays, the Bruno Jura Hound is considered to be a rare breed. They have not been properly introduced to other countries like the United States of America, so the dogs appear randomly, in small numbers, in all parts of the world, although their numbers are bigger in Europe, near their native country, Switzerland.
