Caucasian Ovcharka History

The Caucasian Shepherds are earnest, fearless, and powerful and perfectly suitable for providing guarding duties but with proper training, they can also become loyal and affectionate and protective a meter hight 50 kg cutie pie and function as a family pet. Today, Caucasian Shepherd Dogs are mostly family companions, watchdogs, and property guardians, though they are still used by shepherds to tend to flocks.

They have been around in the area of the Caucasian Mountains since the ancient times and has been used to protect properties from trespassers and guard livestock against predators such as wolves and coyotes for centuries in the countries of the region such as Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia. In some areas, they are called  Caucasian Ovcharka, Caucasian Sheepdog, Kawkasky Owtscharka, or Kaukasische Schaferhund. Most experts claim their ancestors are mitigated from Tibet but some modern archaeological evidence suggests the breed dates back to Mesopotamia. Some myths keep that they are ancestors of wolfs, which were domesticated, but a more rational theory is that they are relatives of the sheepdogs of the Balkans and mastiffs of Asia and the closest to the Tiberian Mastiff, which’s appearance and nature is similar to the Caucasian’s.

There is a great variety of types among the Caucasian dogs depending on their home region. For almost a century, there has been two breed types and standards: The Mountain type, which is long-coated and has a heavier body mass than the Steppe type, a shorter-coated dog with a lighter body mass as a result of the selection of the breed, which started in the 1920s. The purpose of the selection was to develop personality traits, such as physical strength, braveness, sharp hearing and sight, endurance, and self-confidence. They also were able to develop the breed's dense, waterproof coat. Selective breeding has allowed people to own Caucasian shepherd dogs in all kinds of climates, including those with more extreme temperatures.

The first mention of a large molosser dog, which could be something like the Caucasian, was used by the army of Armenian Tsar Tigran the II, dates from the first century but they really got the public’s attention since the  20 th century. The USSR started using Caucasian Shepherds as guard dogs in prisons and gulags. In the 1960s thousands of these dogs were brought to serve as border patrols along the Berlin Wall. When the wall came down in 1989, some 7,000 patrol dogs were dispersed, and many were given to families in Germany to live out the rest of their days.

The Caucasian shepherd dog is a fully standardized  Georgian breed, recognized by most major kennel organizations such as the American Kennel Club and the United Kennel Club.
