Cheagle History
The Cheagle is a small-sized dog breed, that came to existence after cross-breeding the Beagle and the Chihuahua. The trend of creating new designer breeds started around the middle of the 20th century, in North America, with crossbreeding purebred dogs with each other, in order to create new dogs, which suited people’s different lifestyles. These hybrid dogs were an instant success, thanks to the fact that they always inherited the best and most desirable qualities and traits of their parent breeds. Unfortunately, this popularity does not mean, that we are certain about every detail of these hybrid breed’s ancestry, and the intention which led the breeder to develop these dogs.
This is not different in the case of the Cheagle, the history of the breed is very uncertain. However, it is known that the breed was developed relatively recently, during the late 1990s. In order to better understand the motive behind the creation of the Cheagle, we need to learn about the two-parent breeds’ history. First of all, the Beagle’s origins can be traced back to Roman times, thus it is believed to be a very ancient breed. It is thought that the breed was used for hunting purposes, after its creation. Later, the breed got imported to the United Kingdom, where it was crossed with some scent- breeds, with the intention of heightening the Beagles hunting abilities and in order to make the breed bigger, and taller. The Beagle we know today emerged during the late 18th century. regarding the other parent breed’s history, the Chihuahua is an ancient breed that emerged back in the 9th century, in Mexico from the Techichi tribe. During the early centuries, it was believed that the Chihuahua possesses some spiritual power, and can accompany their owners through the afterlife after they were buried together. The breed’s popularity never faced any significant decline over the centuries, and it is still very popular today.
The Cheagle is the perfect combination of these two breeds. The breed inherited the Beagle’s excellent hunting abilities, intelligence, and prey drive. While the Chihuahua gave the Cheagle their size and less active companion style. The majority of the Cheagle specimens resemble the Chihuahua in their size and snout and have the Beagle’s round dark eyes, ears, head-shape, tail, and occasionally, some facial markings too. Speaking of the Cheagle’s temperament, the breed is energetic, mostly excited, and fearless like the Chihuahuas, yet loving and kind like the Beagles. For the reason that they have the fearlessness and excitement of a Chihuahua, any Cheagle needs to be supervised during playing with children.
However, every single Cheagle specimen is different from the other, due to the fact that most of the puppies are first-generation ones, and the multigenerational crossing the relatively rare in the case of the recently developed designer breed. Besides, some breeders prefer first-generation Cheagles, because they are convinced that crossing two purebreds, will result in the perfect mixed puppy. The Cheagle is always kept as a playful and energetic family companion. Furthermore, thanks to their size, they can be easily transported and be side-by-side with their owners all day long. Just like other hybrid breeds, the Cheagle is recognized by the Dog Registry of America, the Design Canine Registry, the American Canine Hybrid Club, and the Designer Breed Registry.
