Gaddi Kutta History
We don’t know the exact origin of the Gaddi Kutta, because their lineage has been lost in history. What we can take as granted is that they are mastiffs from northern India. They are mostly found in the western Himalayas and Himachal Pradesh but can also be seen in Nepal and Pakistan. Local myth says that they are a cross of mastiffs and tigers, but even though these dogs are just as ferocious as tiger and just as faithful and protective as a family dog it is probably more likely that they are a mix of wild dingo-like dogs of the Himalayas and Mastiff">Tibetan Mastiffs (which they are often confused too). The most rational explanation of their origin is that they are simply a sub-breed of the Mastiff">Tibetan Mastiff, which have adapted themselves to survive in the rough conditions of the Himalayas.
They get their name from the local term of “Gaddi,” which means shepherd. Kutta just means dog in Urdu. The English name for these canines is usually ‘Indian Panther Hound’ or ‘Mahidant Mastiff.
They were bred to hunt but because of their strength and intelligence, they are usually used to guard and herd goats, sheep, and other livestock. Their reputation precedes them – as ferocious and courageous, unmatched in their instincts to protect what is theirs. Three or four well-bred caddies are enough to handle the guard duties for thousands of cattle. They are strong enough to keep the herd secure from any attack by wild animals such as panthers leopards and bears and intelligent enough to work independently in finding strays and bringing them back to their pens.
Their physical appearance helps them to survive in the rocky steep terrains and adapt to the rapidly changing weather conditions of the Himalayas. With a massive, heavily feathered tail and a unique double coating around the throat & shoulders, these dogs can stand a snowstorm, and not wither still. One of their main attributes is their massive, arched neck that protects them from predators. They have long, heavy legs and very large feet that are feathered, which makes them even more intimidating.
The Gaddi Kutta is not a “pure” breed, according to the kennel clubs of India.
