German Longhaired Pointer History

Origins

The German Longhaired Pointer was developed in Germany and it is used as a multipurpose gundog. It is closely related to its cousins, the German Shorthaired Pointer, and the German Wirehaired Pointer. Moreover, the German Longhaired Pointer was originally a slow-moving dog, so German breeders started adding setters and English Pointers into their bloodlines in the 19th century. The speed of the German Longhaired Pointer was enhanced as a result of the addition of several other breeds. The breed has descended from the bird, hawk, and water dogs, as well as scent hounds or Brackens as they are known in Germany. It was a very stubborn and temperamental breed before the addition of other breeds, however, it has since been bred for a steady, friendly temperament.

Further development

As the German Longhaired Pointer originated from Germany, it was first shown and presented in Frankfurt in 1878. Breeders, therefore, began to concentrate their effort on creating dogs that excelled in both the field and the show arena, a goal that they continue to pursue today. Although the breed’s exact year of birth is unknown, pure breeding of the German Longhaired Pointer has been documented since 1879 when the officially adopted breed standard was written by Baron von Schorlemer. Furthermore, back in the time function became more preferred over form. As Karl Brandt, an early expert and theorist on this breed and its precursors wrote in the Ilustrierten Jagdzeitung (1883); “At field competitions (trials), which should be part of breeding programs, the dogs will hopefully prove that they have not lost their natural hunting ability during the years when only looks dictated breeding”.

Furthermore, like most of the longhaired pointing breeds, the German Longhaired Pointer is also descended from spaniels and pointers. Being one of the oldest longhaired pointer breeds, as well as a versatile breed, it is one of the few that does not allow the dog to be pure black or black and white. Breeders developed the black and white Large Munsterlander from the German Longhaired Pointer after it was decided that the breed must only be brown and white. According to experts, there were thoughts that the white and black coloration also involved some undesirable characteristics.

The breed’s job

As a gun dog, German Longhaired Pointers are expected to search, point, track, and retrieve game. They are excellent at a variety of hunting conditions, including waterfowl hunting, upland game bird hunting, and retrieving furred wildlife in the forests or prairies, such as rabbits and squirrels. They have a unique ability in being able to switch from a calm household pet to a fiery, passionate hunter. Having been bred for hunting for over a century, they are superior, tried, and tested hunting companions.

Recognition

The German Longhaired Pointer was recognized by the United Kennel Club in 2006, allowing the breed to compete in UKC events. The breed was also registered in the Foundation Stock Service of the American Kennel Club in 2011 and it is allowed to compete in AKC performance events but has not been accepted into a specific group. Overall, the German Longhaired Pointer is a medium-sized dog, powerfully built with a long elegant coat. The breed is loyal and relishes the company of people. They make great family pets and are equally at home having a cuddle as they are out on a run or in the shooting field.
