Glen of Imaal Terrier History
Although there is evidence that the Glen of Imaal Terrier is a very rare but centuries-old breed. They were nearly unknown even in their home nation until recently and still little is known about them. The breed originates from Ireland's County Wicklow and within it the territory of Glen of Imaal, from which the name derives.
Purpose
The breed was created to be a multi-purpose hunter that could hunt fox and badger as well as rid the house of rats. They were also utilized in organized dogfights due to his combative attitude. The role of a spit dog, in which the dog worked a treadmill-like apparatus that powered the rotation of a frying spit, was one of his most exciting tasks.
Ancestry
It is hard to pinpoint when exactly did the breed appear. During the second part of the 16th century, however, we may be able to thank Queen Elizabeth for setting the situation. She enlisted the support of French and German mercenaries to put down severe rebellions in British-occupied Ireland.
Some of them also settled in Wicklow County when the war ended. From our point of view which is important is that they also brought their dogs with them, which became the ancestors of the modern Basset Hound and the smaller Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen,( commonly known as “PBGVs”).
These foreign dwarf hounds mated with the indigenous terrier population, resulting in a new breed of dog that was ideally suited to the region and its inhabitants. Presumably, the Glen of Imaal Terrier became in existence this way and has been given the name of its birthplace.
Recognition
The Irish Kennel Club originally recognized the Glen of Imaal Terrier in 1934, and the Kennel Club of England in 1975. Federation Cynologique Internationale has recognized it in a number of nations (FCI). The Glen of Imaal Terrier finally received full AKC certification on October 1, 2004, after a few decades of establishing its foothold in the United States.
Fun fact
Glens do not really bark. When the circumstance demands it, their bravery comes to the rescue. They don't have to bark since they don't need to. They'd prefer to take action instead of just talking about it.
