Hanover Hound History

Origins

The Hanover Hound’s, also known as the Hanoverian Scenthound, the ancestry can be traced back to the 17th century and is one of Germany’s schweisshunds or bloodhounds. This simply implies that he was developed to be able to follow the blood trail left behind by a wounded animal. The Hanover Hound was created through the crossbreeding of huge bloodhounds and it is a large breed with heavy bone and musculature. Males are usually heavier and larger than females, averaging over 80 pounds at maturity. However, according to experts, there was documentation that suggested that the Hanover Hound has developed almost unchanged from the so-called Liam Hound, a large medieval bloodhound that was very popular for its ability to hunt and kill wild game. However, with the intervention of weapons, the methods of hunting big game have changed. The use of blood tracking hounds (Schweisshunds or Bracken) to locate wounded game was necessary. This breed description stayed the same until the hunting estate of the Kingdom of Hannover got more involved with them. The Hanoverian Hunting Estate in the Kingdom of Hannover furthered the development of this breed while preserving the proven methods of handling these hounds. Eventually, the breed was developed into the Hanoverian Scenthound. In 1894, a German breed club was established to preserve and promote the working qualities of the Hanoverian Scenthound. Since then, the breeding of these dogs has continued strictly with regard to their working ability and they have been utilized exclusively in large game hunting fields as specialists in tracking cloven-hoof game. However, in the early 1900s, the breed has reached its peak in popularity and was on the verge of becoming extinct. Fortunately, breed enthusiasts came together and began working aggressively to preserve the breed. The Hanoverian Scenthound is no longer considered an endangered breed, despite its status as a rare breed.

Abroad

Around 1750 in the United States, a German immigrant called Johannes Plott settles in what is now North Carolina. He brought five Hanoverian Scenthounds from Germany that were skilled at tracking wounded wildlife and hunting wild boar. These Hanoverian Scenthounds were used in developing the Plott Hound seen today. Furthermore, in the 1980s, the breed was also imported to France and it was crossed with the Bavarian Hound. This cross gave birth to the Bavarian Mountain Hound.

Recognition

The breed was first recognized by the Federation Cynologique Internationale and then in 1996, the United Kennel Club recognized the Hanover Hound as the Hanoverian Hound. It was not until 2017 that the American Kennel Club approved the Hanover Hound to be included in its Foundation Stock Service. The breed has been approved under the name of Hanoverian Scenthound. The Hanoverian Scenthound Club of America was also formed to promote and protect the qualities of the breed.
