Horgi History

The Horgi, also known as the Siborgi, is a relatively new hybrid breed, which is thought to emerge during the late 1990s. The trend of creating new hybrid breeds started around the middle 20th century, in North America and in Canada, with cross-breeding purebred dogs with each other, in order to create new, hybrid breeds. These designer dogs were an instant hit, because they always inherited the best and most desirable qualities and traits of the parent breeds. Unfortunately, this popularity does not mean, that we are certain about every detail of the hybrid breed’s ancestry, and the intention which led the breeder to develop these dogs.

The Horgi was developed by cross-breeding the Siberian Husky">Siberian Husky with the Pembroke or Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Due to the fact that there is not much documentation, nor enough information about the Horgi’s initial development, or about the motive behind its creation, we have to look at its parent breed’s histories in order to have a better understanding of the Horgi. Firstly, there are two separate varieties of the Welsh Corgi, the Cardigan, and the Pembroke. Moreover, until the 1930s, these two varieties were not officially considered separate breeds. It is thought that the Cardigan Corgi is one of the oldest European herding breeds, it is believed that the breed has been in Wales for 3,000 years now, herding cattle. The Pembroke Corgi was also developed to be a working breed, on the Welsh farms. The real fame came for the Corgi after the Queen of England, Elizabeth II, showed off her pack of Corgis running around Windsor Castle. Regarding the Siberian Husky">Siberian Husky, it is thought that the breed comes from the Siberian nomad tribe of Chukchi and that the Husky is one of the oldest breeds in the whole world. The Husky was created in order to help people in the harsh Northern environment, to pull the sleds, and to be companions, who kept them warm during the long and cold nights. The breed became quintessential during the early 20th century when the Gold Rush hit Alaska.

At first, sight, mixing the large Siberian Husky">Siberian Husky, with the small-sized and long Corgi might seem a little strange. Usually, this mix allows the puppies born out of the same litter, to be very different from each other in physical appearance. However, the behavioral traits, the herding instinct is usually really strong in them. Originally that was the breeders’ intention; to create a small-sized, miniature Husky, a small herding puppy. Even though the Horgi’s herding instinct is undeniable, the breed is mostly kept as outgoing, active, and intelligent family companions.

Meanwhile, both of the Horgi’s parent breeds are long recognized by all the major kennel clubs, like any other designer breeds, the Horgi is not recognized by the major kennel clubs yet, with the reason of lacking homogeneity and consistency. Nonetheless, the Designer Breed Registry, the Designer Dogs Kennel Club, the American Canine Hybrid Club, International Designer Canine Registry registered the breed. Thanks to the climbing popularity of the hybrid breeds, and the fact that the Corgi is an ultimate English favorite, the Horgi is facing increasing demand.
