Istrian Shorthaired Hound History
Introduction
The Istrian Shorthaired Hound may not appear to be a well-known breed, but it is one of, if not the oldest, hound breeds in the Balkans. They have a long and illustrious history that dates back hundreds of years and with good cause.
While they aren't the largest dogs, they are well-known for being excellent hunters, capable of tracking hares, foxes, and rabbits with their speed, keen senses, and long endurance.
They are quiet and relaxed in the home, but this does not necessarily imply that they are the greatest of pets. They are exceedingly apprehensive of children, are only moderately good with other dogs, and tend to bark when strangers are present.
They are normally quite affectionate with their owners or trainers, although they are not as playful as other breeds. With all of these characteristics together, they are still best suited for hunting rather than being kept just as pets.
Origins
Istria is the Adriatic Sea's largest peninsula, shared by three countries: Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy. As Croatia controls the majority of the peninsula, the Istrian Shorthaired Hound is considered a Croatian breed.
Although historical records of dog breeds are scarce, it's difficult to say when the Istrian Shorthaired Hound first arose as a unique breed. In the 17th century, other Croatian hunting dogs, such as the famous Dalmatians, became independent breeds.
It's likely that the Istrian Shorthaired Hound is even older, as a dog with a similar appearance is depicted in a fresco painted in 1497. Moreover, literary references from the preceding centuries have been discovered to support the thesis that the Istrian Hound is the oldest hound breed from the Balkans.
There is also speculation that because of their general build and personality traits, they stemmed from a combination of European scent hounds, and the dogs were often traded by the Phoenicians and ancient civilizations that populated much of the Mediterranean coast.
Moreover, throughout their history, they seem to have been revered for their prized hunting abilities as that is often the greatest associated with the breed in general.
The Istrian Shorthaired Hound is primarily used for hunting foxes and rabbits, although sometimes they were also used to hunt wild boar and birds, such as quail and pheasant.
They were described as animals with "boundless persistence and a remarkable enthusiasm for hunting" by an Austro-Hungarian Colonel, F. B. Laska. They were extremely devoted and obedient, making them great hunting dogs.
Recognition
In 1924, a studbook containing the lineages of dogs classified as Istrian Shorthaired Hounds was developed.
This was utilized to keep the breed alive until 1949 when the Fédération Cynologique Internationale recognized it. It took another quarter turn before the first breed standard was released in 1973, and another quarter turn before the UKC recognized it in 2006.
They are still commonly used as hunting dogs in the region, but they have yet to transition into any form of companion animal, as their reserved and unique personalities haven't made them popular in most households.
