Majorca Ratter History

Early history

Majorca Ratter’s exact origins and history are really uncertain due to the lack of documentation before the late 19th century. During the early 20th century, Valencians migrated to Mallorca, and these people probably have brought some ratter terriers with them in order to control the vermin population on the island.

Ancestry

Moreover, it is widely accepted that one of Majorca Ratter’s ancestors is the Ca Ratter Mallorquí, which is also related to the Gos Ratter Valenciá. Regarding that these are both terrier breeds, which were imported to Spanish territory from England a long time ago, it is also possible that the English Terrier is also among the predecessors of the Majorca Ratter. Once all these breeds got to the island of Mallorca, they started to mate together naturally, and form a distinct, and unique line of terrier, with their own characteristics.

Development

Initially, the breed was developed to function as all terrier breeds do; to help control the vermin population. The Majorca Ratter was created to hunt, capture, and kill any vermin. Interestingly, the Mallorca Ratter has developed and owned a unique style of hunting. Instead of using raw speed to capture their game like most of the hound breeds, they seem to have learned a technique, that mostly resembles cats’ hunting techniques. This practice involves creeping slowly towards their quarry and then using the power in their muscular back legs to leap forward and pounce on them.

Recognition and modern times

With the intention of preserving the breed, the Club Espanyol del Ca Rater Mallorquí (the Mallorca Ratter Dog Club) was founded in 1990. The club’s goal is to preserve the Majorca Ratter’s traits and appearance by raising awareness and selective breeding to keep the bloodline and the DNA pool pure and true to breed. Registrations also began during the turn of the 21st century. In 2002 the breed was recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fishing of Mallorca. Nowadays, people rather keep Majorca Ratters as active, loyal, and intelligent family companions than for hunting purposes. The breed is proven to be really intelligent, easily accommodating, and responsive to any lifestyle.
