Norrbottenspets History

History of the Norrbottenspets

The Norrbottenspets is a spitz-type dog originated from Norrbotten, Sweden, and Lapland, Finland. They were originally used as farm and hunting dogs – especially in the 20th century when squirrel fur was valuable – but with time they became more popular as companion dogs.

The earliest documentation of the Norrbottenspets is from the 17th century but the breed was registered by the Swedish Kennel Club only in 1910, giving them official recognition. However, in the following years because of the World Wars the population of the Norrbottenspets decreased dramatically and came close to extinction. In fact, the Swedish Kennel Club declared the breed extinct in 1948. But a few years later it turned out the Norrbottenspets dogs were still alive, surviving in remote villages and they were collected to start a breeding program in the 1950s and early 1960s. By the year 1966, the number of these dogs was enough to re-establish the breed and, this year, the official name was confirmed as Norrbottenspets. In Finland, where the Swedish standards were accepted, the registration of these dogs started in 1973. In the same year, the Swedish Kennel Club proposed a cooperative program together with the Finnish Kennel Club to search for more Norrbottenspets dogs. Both Clubs realized they share a common heritage and started to make a great effort to preserve this breed. In the following decades, they searched through the countries to find more individuals they can add to the gene pool. In the 1970s and 1980s, there was only about 20 registration each year but as more people knew about the breed the number of puppies registered started to increase and nowadays is over 200 per year.

Today in both Sweden and Finland the breeding is highly controlled to ensure the health of the animals and making sure they are only distantly related. Most of these dogs today live in one of these two countries, but they are far not as popular as other dog breeds. Although they were exported to other countries, including the United States, the breed is still not recognized by the American Kennel Club.
