Old Danish Pointer History

The Old Danish Pointer is the only Pointer dog that originates from Scandinavia. The history of the breed can be traced back to about the year 1710 when a man named Morten Bak, living in Glenstrup in north-eastern Denmark, crossed gypsy dogs through eight generations with local Farmdogs and in this way established a pure breed piebald white and brown dogs called Old Danish Pointers. It has been suggested that those ‘gypsy dogs’ were owned by the Roma people and were possibly part of Spanish Pointing dogs and originated from other hunting breeds. However other people claim that Spanish Pointing dogs were brought to ports by Danish soldiers, possibly returning from The War of Spanish Succession, which happened between 1701 and 1714. Many people argued that this gypsy story is just a story as the Gypsies were not viewed with favor at the time, they were constantly being the hunter or deported. Some say this makes it very unlikely that they could breed over eight generations without trouble or that people would want Gypsy dog mixed into their hunting dogs. Whichever theory you believe, the result of the breeding created a stable and quiet dog that was brave and determined.

Before the 18th century, hunting with dogs was meant to be something only the aristocracy were allowed to do but some reform changed that so more common people started breeding dogs they could hunt with and the creation of the Old Danish Pointer was a direct consequence. The breed was suited for small as well as large hunting grounds, it kept in close contact with the human hunter moving a lot slower than other hounds on the hunt but accomplishing their task without creating an unnecessary distribution of the ground. It was named for pointing and hunting birds. At this time it was a trend occurring all over Europe, not just in Denmark. However, by the early 1900s, the Old Danish Pointer started to decline in popularity as other breeds like the German Short-haired Pointer became more so. Throughout the 20th century, there were many features contributing to the negative effects, such as the arrival of new hunting breeds from the rest of the world and the two damaging Word Wars. The breed’s numbers decreased dramatically and it was now at risk of extinction. However, after World War II, several efforts in the country were made to save its native breeds including the Old Danish Pointer. As a reaction, a breed club was formed within Denmark in 1947 and the members of the club started the process of a breeding program to prevent the extinction of the breed. Their efforts were fairly successful and in 1963 the dog was recognized by the FCI. In the 1980s the popularity of the Old Danish Pointer puppies increased again, thanks to a Danish nature show on television called ‘En Naturlig Forklaring’ that featured a sweet Old Danish Pointer called Balder. However, it was not all good as it led to uncontrolled breeding and the quality of dogs dropped for a time. Overall, today, it is at a stable number but it is an uncommon dog and it does have a lot of fans, not just in Denmark but also in a few in Holland, Germany, and Sweden. The United Kennel Club officially accepted the breed in the year 2006. The breed has always been a loyal, devoted, and friendly type of dog, it can be a good family dog.
