Prazsky Krysarik History

According to historical tales, the Prazsky Krysarik has been known for a long time in the remote parts of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Hence, in the Middle Ages, the breed was popular in Central European palaces, furthermore, the breed is known to be selectively bred as a companion dog for nobles, princes, kings, and aristocrats. It was originally developed in Bohemia where these dogs were prized by Bohemian aristocracy. As their name suggests they were also commonly used as rat catchers in rural and urban households because of the dogs’ small size, quick movement, and highly developed sense of smell. The Prague Ratter was frequently seen around the court and at feasts and given as state gifts from the Bohemian royal family to European rulers. It was already an established breed by the time of the rule of the Polish king Bolesław II. the Generous (1058–1081). He became fond of the Ratter and had two of them imported from Bohemia. Later, his owners were ordinary citizens. From the history of the Prazsky Krysarik, we can learn a lot, because most of it has been preserved. For instance, we know that this breed really comes from Bohemia and its origins can be traced back to the early history of Czechoslovakia.

In the 19th century, the popularity of the Prazsky Krysarik started to decline when the Miniature Pinscher became more fashionable. The breed went through a renaissance in the 1980s as Czechs and Slovaks started to breed them again. In 1980 its breeding process has successfully started to regenerate so the Prazsky Krysarik is again a favorite pet in the homes of the Central European owners.

In the present day, there are approximately 6,000 Prazsky Krysarik worldwide, and unfortunately, they usually only have 1-3 puppies per year, thus, their breeding process operates at a slower pace, than other breeds. The breed is currently not recognized by any of the major kennel clubs but does compete as a separate, distinct breed in dog shows in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The breed became acknowledged by the FCI in 2019.

The Prazsky Krysarik holds the record of being the smallest dog breed (measured by height) in the world. Nonetheless, this record might be misleading about its behavioral nature, which is really strong and independent, despite their small bodies.
