Sabueso Espanol History

The Sabueso Español is a Spanish hunting breed, which is also known as the Great Spanish Hound, the Spanish Hound, and the Lebrero Hound. The Sabueso Español is a really old breed, its origins date back to the middle ages. The first written record mentioning the breed was found from the Middle Ages, from the 1300s, in the book Libro de la Monteria del Rey Alfonso XI. The King of Castile wrote about hounds with similar attributes and a great resemblance to the Sabueso Español, alongside specific Bloodhounds. Back then, the Sabueso Español was considered to be a French dog, initially bred in France, and the ancient tribes, which dwelled in its central part, granted it with the name Chien Español.

Consequently, according to the experts, hounds were started to be bred in Spain. Around that time, these dogs were mainly used to hunt bear and wild boar. These talented scent-hounds possessed the ability to follow the scent of a wounded animal for miles. Because of the breed’s ancient origins, it is nearly impossible to determine its exact ancestry. Nonetheless, it is believed to be true, that the Sabueso Español, sprang directly from the Canis Segusius, that Gauls imported to the Iberian Peninsula, to Spain. Thus, marginally it is possible that the St. Hubert type of hounds played a great role in the breed’s early development.

As the firearms cane with the industrial revolution, and got introduced to big game hunting, the population of the big game significantly decreased, and thus the need for the Spanish Hound declined too. Their usage transformed into hunting smaller games such as hare and foxes. However, through the northern parts of Spain, the Spanish Hound was still used in hunting wild boar, and roe deer. Multiple artworks remained from that period of time captivating two variations of the same breed; the Great Spanish Hound and the Sabueso Español, which was a slightly smaller, lighter built breed.

After the Spanish Civil War, the breed was on the brink of extinction, as breeders crossbred them with other types of hounds in order to make the dogs more effective. Moreover, German and British hunting dogs became more fashionable in the hunting communities, which was also disadvantageous for the Sabueso Español. Antonio Lopez Milan is credited with the restoration of the breed, to its initial appearance while preserving and developing its innate hunting capabilities. The Sabueso Español’s breed standard was drawn up in 1982. Later, in 1996 the breed finally got recognized by the UKC (United Kennel Club). The Sabueso Español is considered to be a very effective hunting companion, who can inform its owner about its current trailing situation with the help of using different modulations of its voice. Nowadays, the breed finds its purpose as police dogs that are used both in bomb detections and in drug searches.
