Sabueso fino Colombiano History

The Subeso Fino Colombiano, also known as the Perro Fino Colombiano and the Colombian Fino Hound, is a medium-sized dog with a beautiful appearance. It is a hunting breed developed from pack hounds along with some pointing dogs imported from Continental Europe, Great Britain, and North America in colonial days.

Furthermore, what we know for sure is that the breed has been utilized in Colombia, as the name suggests, to track and hunt large rodents like the Lowland Paca and the Capybara for at least two hundred years. Moreover, the Subeso Fino Colombian was the most popular hunting dog among humble farmers and peasants of the area because of their ability to help track and hunt the large rodents as food. However, they were not only popular among the common people, but they were also very much loved by the upper class in Colombia as they often excelled at hunting and sporting events as well. However, due to geographic isolation which was suffered by the country over its history, the Subeso Fino Colombiano has been led to a great diversity of hounds till preserved and used for hunting.

There are no clear records of their development, but according to experts they are believed to be a combination of several types of hounds that were imported to South America starting with the colonization of the continent by European countries such as Spain and England, and continued throughout the 20th century, giving these dogs a great deal of diversity. Some of the breeds that are believed to have contributed to the development of this talented and tenacious hunter include the Bloodhound and pack hounds like the Foxhound. The breed is a beautiful scenthound with an excellent sense of smell, body with a rectangular proportion of medium size, with a height at withers that varies between 45 and 55 cm, also having almond eyes, long ears, and scissor bite. Their skin is usually loose and regularly has jowls, the tail is a long saber that thins as it reaches the tip.

On the 21st of April in 2014 the breed has been listed as the Sabueso Fino Colombiano and was given recognition by the official kennel club of Colombia, the Associación Club Canino Colombiano (ACCC). Although the breed has not yet earned recognition with any of the major worldwide kennel clubs, the official breed club, the Asociación Club del Sabueso Fino Colombiano is working to meet the requirement set forth by the FCI to be recognized internationally as an official breed, with the most recent standard updated as recently as January of 2018.
