Schillerstövare History
The Schillerstövare or Schiller Hound is considered to be a relatively new scent-hound breed, for the reason being that it was developed in the late 1800s in Sweden. Two breeders named Dr. Adolf Patrick Hamilton and Per Schiller are credited with the breed’s development. According to the records and documents they wrote, they had the intention to develop a speedy hunting dog that would easily adapt and tolerate the harsh Scandinavian weather conditions.
The breed is originated from the English Foxhound, as the foundation of the breeding process. The breeder pair also included German, Swedish, and Swiss hounds, and the English Harrier to the breading mixture. Initially, the process came to an end with creating two different breeds, the Schillerstövare and the Hamilton-Stovare or in its other name, the Hamiltonstövare. They were very similar in appearance and in their behavioral traits, and capabilities, yet the Hamilton-Stovare was much taller. They also differed in the color of their coats, because the latter was tricolor, while the Schillerstövare had a distinguishing brown-black combination.
The first specimen of the Schillerstövare was presented in 1886, at a Swedish national dog show. Yet, despite of the breed’s well-documented history, and its popularity in dog shows in the late 1800s, it was not until 1907, that the breed got recognized by the Swedish Kennel Club. The Schillerstövare was initially bred to be a versatile and very effective scenting hound, although the breed is often described as a gun dog. The dogs were fancied by most of the rabbit and fox hunters, thanks to their superior scenting ability; the dogs are able to track down their prey and howl in a high pitch voice, until their owner approaches, alerting them about the prey’s position. The dogs are talented hunters, who can work efficiently both individually and together, in small packs. Being developed in cold regions, the breed is believed to be very hardy. This hunting tradition still remains in practice in the remote villages of Scandinavia, where dogs are still used.
The Schillerstövare got acknowledged by the UKC (United Kennel Club) in 2006, nevertheless, it is not currently recognized by the AKC (American Kennel Club). The breed got international recognition when, the Fédération Cynologique Internationale registered the dogs, in the late 20th century, classifying the breed as scent-hounds. Nowadays, the Schillerstövare is thought to be a very rare breed outside of its native land, Sweden. The dogs are more likely to be family pets, rather than being hunting companions in our age.
