Sloughi History
The Sloughi is one of the oldest domestic hound breeds. It finds its origin in North Africa going back several hundred years, at least to the 12-13th century. Like many breeds that were created in antiquity around the Mediterranean basin, the breed’s detailed ancestry is sort of lost in the mists of history. However, it is thought, that three sighthound breeds originated from this dry and hot region, including the Sloughi. It is also theorized, that Berber cavalrymen who accompanied Hannibal during his well-known crossing of the Alps, might have introduced the Sloughi to Europe.
Experts also presume that Sloughi-type of hounds were favored hunting companions of the Egyptian nobility, of nomadic chieftains, Berber kings, who kept packs of tough, strong, yet graceful hounds that possessed the ability of course game across vast expanses in the desert. The dogs were frequently used to hunt mostly deer, rabbits, gazelle, even wild pig, and any other dessert mammal that came along, helping to feed both the tribes and themselves. During that time period, the breed was also known as the Arabian Greyhound. Although the Sloughi has always been often compared with the Saluki, and sometimes even been mistaken for a Saluki, whereas the two breeds are very different.
Both the First and the Second World War had devastating effects on the breed. The tragic events disrupted the breeding programs across all of Europe. During the French occupation, hunting with sighthounds became illegal, moreover, any dogs who were seen on the sight of hunting was shot down right away in the regions and territories occupied by the French.
The first Sloughi was introduced in 1973 to the United States of America directly from Libya, and the first litter born in the United States was whelped in 1981. Almost all of the Sloughis found nowadays in Europe and in the United States are from dogs imported directly from Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, or Libya. The (ASLA) American Sloughi Association was founded a few years later, in 1989. Interestingly, in 1997, the Sloughi was the first breed that got recognized by the AKC (American Kennel Club) as a Foundation Stock Service breed and gained the ability to compete in obedience, agility, tracking, and lures coursing events. Even though Sloughis are categorized as sighthounds that are known to chase their prey on sight, the breed is an also excellent tracker, who can flush out the game by scent before the final chase begins. Then, in 2016, the breed got accepted into the hound group within the AKC.
