Smaland Hound History
The Smaland Hound also referred to as the Smålandsstövare, is a medium-sized hound that originated from the southern part of Sweden. Interestingly, it is the smallest of all the native Swedish scent-hound breeds. The breed is thought to be a really old one, because there are several indicators, that the dogs can trace their history back to the 16th century. During the era of the Swedish Empire, multiple wars were fought in the region, with soldiers returning to their homelands, bringing several different kinds of hound breeds with them. These hound breeds are considered to be bred with other local spitz types of dogs, resulting in the foundation stock of the Smålandsstövare we know today. Even though the Smaland Hound and the Rottweiler have very similar black and tan markings, the Smaland Hound is much smaller. Moreover, the Rottweiler is not thought to have played a role in the DNA ancestry of the breed. According to the experts, the Smålandsstövare is a product of both English, German and Polish hound dogs.
Farmers in Sweden always preferred multi-purpose hunting dogs, because often they could only afford to feed a single dog. Consequently, these early breeders’ aim was to develop a very diverse breed, that could adept at hunting individually a number of quarries including foxes, squirrels, hares as well as birds and larger game like the moose. The dogs quickly became favored in the Scandinavian regions, because of the breed’s abilities to hunt in the coldest Swedish winters, on the most rugged terrains. The Smaland Hound quickly gained the reputation, as a hardy, robust working dog. During this initial period of the breeding process, breeders did not make much attention to the dogs’ physical appearance, just to their capabilities and behavioral traits, that is the reason why, these early dogs came in a variety of sizes, colors. This practice was put to an end in the 19th century when breeders started to standardize the breed.
Despite the breed’s long history, it was not until the 1920s, that the Swedish Kennel Club recognized the breed, and a breeder named Frederik von Essen drawn up a breed standard based on a specimen named Skoj av Myren 789 V owned by Mary Stephens from the Torne valley. Over the decades, the Smålandsstövare’s numbers naturally dwindled, and by 1950 it was necessary to include other breeds into the breeding process, otherwise, the Smålandsstövare would have become extinct. This intervention served to keep the breed in existence and also prevented excessive interbreeding which would have led to several health problems.
Nowadays, the breed is in extreme rarity, with less than 100 dogs registered each year. Moreover, they are not widely known outside of their native country, Sweden. The (UKC) United Kennel Club recognized the Smålandsstövare in 2006, in their scent-hound group.
