Tahltan Bear Dog History
The Tahltan Bear Dog is thought to be originated from the Pacific Northwest territories of British Columbia and the Southwestern parts of the Yukon, in Canada, where the indigenous Tahltan Indian tribes lived. The Tahltan Bear Dog is descended from the lines of Spitz and Pariah breeds.
The Tahltan Indian developed and used the breed for hunting mostly larger game, like a bear. The hunting traditions and myths of these tribes were very different than the European hunting practices. Before the day of the hunt, the dogs were ceremonially bled by stabbing them in the hindquarters with a fibula bone of wolves or of foxes. On the morning of the hunt, two dogs were brought in a sack over the hunter’s shoulders until fresh bear tracks were found on the snowy terrain. As the hunters released the dogs near the bear sights, the dogs moved lightly and quickly over the crust of the snow while the huge and heavy bear was slowed by their deep drifts in the snow. The breed’s fox-like staccato yaps harassed the bear into submission or confused it until the hunters arrived close enough to be in a position where they could have fired a clear shot and eventually kill the bear. Another tradition to prepare the dogs for a foray against bigger cats was a claw from a lynx that was used to ceremonially mark the dog’s faces before the hunts. Even though these ceremonies and traditions seem cruel and unnecessary nowadays, back then they were considered to be indispensables, in order to have a successful hunt, thus the Tahltan Bear Dog was the key for these tribes to stay alive.
Although the breed was a relatively small-sized dog, they were very vicious and effective when hunting in packs. Despite being a courageous hunter, the breed was really friendly and family-centric, gentle with smaller animals around the house, and also with children. That is the reason why, the dogs always lived in tents with their owners, sharing board and bed. The breed is famous for having a quite unusual diet that consisted of fish, meat, and smaller birds. Nevertheless, this kind of protein intake was necessary for the dogs to thrive and flourish in the coldest parts of the world.
Interestingly, outside of their native lands and environment, the breed has succumbed to distemper and other problems due to dietary changes often arose. When European explorers started to discover the great white north, or in its other name, Canada, they brought different kinds of dogs with them from Europe for hunting purposes. As the volume of explorers arriving in Canada increased continuously, so did the flow of different dog breeds to the region, causing the Tahltan Bear Dog’s gradual decrease. Breeders did not focus on preserving the breed, for the reason that there were several other, yet more effective and well-known breeds at that time. The Tahltan Bear Dog is presumed to be extinct now, due to the lack of descendants. Moreover, genetic references and archaeological records show no relationship between the Tahltan Bear Dog and any other modern population. Even though there have not been any records of any living specimen of the breed since the 1970s, few people believe that a group of breeding specialists’ efforts has helped the Tahltan Bear Dog survived till now. However, the CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) already revoked the breed’s recognition, declaring it to be extinct.
