Tamaskan Dog History
The Origin of the Tamaskan Dog
The first time you look at a Tamaskan dog you can easily get the impression that you are facing a wolf rather than a dog. But don’t worry, the appearance and the name Tamaskan, which in Native American language means ’mighty wolf’, might refer to a wolf-like dog, in reality, these dogs are really friendly and gentle.
In the 80s a group of five Husky-type dogs, the ancestors of the Tamaskan, were imported to the US. The goal of the breeding was to create a dog with a great temper and with the resemblance of a wolf. Because of the poor records from this era, we cannot be sure of the origin of these ancestors but it’s for sure that even though the Tamaskans look like wolfdogs they do not have any wolf blood in them. They are a cross of Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, and German Shepherds. These crossbred dogs were later imported to Finland for further breeding and additional development, which resulted in a new breed called Utonagan dog. Some believe that the Utonagan dog was later crossed with the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog creating the Tamaskan as we know today, but because there isn’t much-documented history we cannot be sure. It was only in the 90s when a breed club was formed which made better documentation possible. This club later in the 2000s was divided into two groups, one of which was the Utonagan Society. A few years later the Utonagan Society was split, one remained with the same name, another one was called the British and International Utonagan Society which was later changed to Tamaskan Society. The first litter of Tamaskan puppies was produced in 2002, but the name did not exist then. It was only in February 2006 when the Tamaskan Dog Register was formed by Lynn Hardey creating strict rules, including DNA testing, in order to prevent the falsification of the pedigrees. Since then the Tamaskan breed has been exported all over Europe, America, Canada, and Australia.
