Toy Manchester Terrier History
The Black and Tan Terrier, one of the best-known dogs in England, was appreciated for its ability to kill rats in the 16th century. As a matter of fact, they were not valued for their form or breed but only for the number of rats they killed. People also laid bets on the number of rats a dog could kill in a given amount of time. Numerous workers in Manchester were fond of dog-racing and rat-killing contests. It is well known that in 1848, at the Queen’s Hotel Tavern in London, a Toy Manchester Terrier by the name of Tiny, weighing five pounds held the record by killing 300 rats in 54 seconds.
Moreover, Manchester was recognized as the center for two types of events called ‘The Poor Man’s Sports’ which included the killing of the rats and the rabbit chase. An amateur named John Hulme got the idea that he should breed one type of dog that would be proficient in both events. He bred a Whippet with the Black and Tan Terrier resulted in the dog named the Manchester Terrier. Although the Manchester terrier and its Black and Tan terrier ancestors were sometimes considered to be the same breed, it wasn’t until 1923 that the name Manchester Terrier was officially used. During the development, the Manchester Terrier was crossed with many other breeds as well, including the Italian Greyhound. The toy variety of the breed has existed as early as 1881. As the demand for smaller dogs was high in the 19th century, especially by women, inbreeding was practiced to produce smaller versions of the breed, but this resulted in very delicate dogs. To combat this problem, breeders attempted to produce a miniature version instead of a very small one. This eventually resulted in the Toy Manchester terrier or also known as the English Toy Terrier. The Toy Manchester is very small, not weighing more than 12 pounds, courageous and spirited. Its coat is soft, short, and shiny, jet black with particular markings of rich mahogany color. Its ears are natural and stand erect high atop the head.
Early on, the American Kennel Club regarded the Toy Manchester Terrier and the Manchester Terrier as different but inter-breeding breeds, but in 1959, the AKC adjusted the Manchester standard to include both inter-breeding varieties as one breed.
