Vanjari Hound History
The Vanjari Hound, also known as the Banjara Hound/Greyhound, is a breed of dog that is indigenous to northern India. The Vanjari Hound is a sighthound type of dog, which has been bred and used for hunting by the largest gypsy group in India, the Banjara/Vanjara people. As we can tell the breed gets its name from the nomadic Banjara community who were accompanied by these dogs from place to place as they would take the dogs along their sojourns so they could stand guard.
The Vanjari Hound was very much valued and loved by its community, and besides their amazing hunting skills, they were believed to possess the speed and agility of a Greyhound and the stamina of a Collie. Their main job is to observe and they are very consistent in their effort. Moreover, they are also very territorial and protective about their property, so they will always alert if they sense something different. The breed has a thick and dense coat of fur, making them the best cuddle buddy, and an average height of about two feet, and a black coat with specks of grey or blue.
Unfortunately, there is not much known about their history as they never really became popular besides their home. However, eventually, the Vanjari people left behind their nomad days and lives and started to integrate into modern, mainstream societies. With this continued consolidation of the nomads, the breed is currently at a dangerous risk of uncontrolled inbreeding and pure Vanjari Hounds are in scarce numbers today.
