Bakharwal Dog History

The Bakharwal Dog, along with the Gaddi Kutta, is also a native Indian breed. Specifically, they are originated in the states of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Because of their ferocious temper strong and large appearance and intelligence, they are also primarily used for guarding cattle and protecting farms and homes in, the Himalayas. Moreover their shepherd function nowadays the Bakharwal Dog has been used by the Indian Police Service in order to capture militants across the country. They can also be found in Afghanistan and Pakistan in smaller numbers.

Its exact origin story is also unclear and is still a matter of debate. The local myths say that the Bakharwal dog was obtained by crossing a wolf with a Molosser sheepdog approximately 300 years ago. What we can know for sure is that the breed originated in Jammu & Kashmir a state of India and two nomadic groups bred them namely ‘Gujjars’ and the ‘Bakarwals’  for the purpose of guarding their flocks of goats, sheep, and cattle, along with their houses. The Bakharwal Dog may be descended from crossbreeding the Tibetan Mastiff with the Indian pariah dog but is claimed to be” the oldest Indian Dog which for centuries has been surviving with the Gujjar tribe” by the Gujjar herdsmen and some scholars.

According to experts, the Bakerwali dog is different from a common dog in many ways. Despite its large size, scary and predatory appearance it is” vegetarian “. It only feeds on milk and bread made of maize, if possible which helps to keep it away from attacking the herd it’s protecting. The birth rate among the Bakerwali dogs is also low as compared to common dogs, which is one of the reasons, that they are extremely rare and difficult to breed. The other one is much more tragic. This breed has been targeted by separatist militants in Jammu and Kashmir. They shot the dogs to prevent them from alerting people of their intrusion. These separatist militants prevented herdsmen from going to higher reaches, which caused many Bakharwal Dogs to catch the disease and die.

There are two strains of this breed, the Simple Bakarwal, and the Ladakhi Bakarwal. The Ladakhi Bakarwal strain has a specific unique ability of open mouth barking, for an extensive period of time, also called as ‘hk-saya’ or ‘yak-saya’ in the native language spoken there. It means nonstop barking without taking a breath or continuous bark in one breath.

The Bakharwal Dog is neither recognized by any major kennel clubs.
