South Russian Ovcharka History
The South Russian Ovcharka is also known as the Ukrainian Shepherd Dog and as the South Russian Sheepdog. The exact historical background of the South Russian Ovcharka is covered in antiquity. There are many documents and records available stating different kinds of ancestries for the breed. However, it is certain that the breed’s native country is the Southern part of Russia and Ukraine. The breed shows a great resemblance to the wild wolf, for the reason being that the South Russian Ovcharka is thought to be directly descended from the wolf. As the more domestic, less wild specimens of a wolf came to the villages, locals started to cross them with local breeds, like shepherds, and sighthound dogs. Back in those remote villages, on the Russian Steppes, people used the dogs, to herd the flock and livestock and as guardians.
With their long, shaggy coat, this reed is similar in appearance to other sheepdogs like the Croatian Sheepdog and the Catalan Sheepdog, indicating that these breeds might also have been involved in their development process. On the other hand, there are experts stating that the antecedents of the South Russian Ovcharka were brought from Spain and from other European countries, and were bred with local dogs, including the Hungarian Komondor and the Caucasian Ovcharka, around 1790. This theory is standing on safe grounds, because the addition of these sturdy local breeds, to the smaller Europen shepherd dogs, would have been necessary, in order to give the breeds the size and the abilities to successfully fight off larger local predators, including bears and wolves.
Nonetheless, during the last hundred years, the breed has been under a threat. As modern technologies gained more attention, farmers started to move away from food animal production, instead of using their lands for arable farming, making the South Russian Ovcharka less and less necessary to the rural lifestyle. The breed was on the brink of extinction, as demand fell for it. Fortunately, a man named Professor Brauner is managed to restore the breed and he began to encourage local breeding programs to start again, in the early 1920s. As the First World War was coming up, the breed was also bred by military kennels, with the aim of developing assertive working dogs.
In spite of these breeding efforts, unfortunately, the South Russian Ovcharka’s population numbers were starting to decrease again. The population size became so alarmingly low, that it was necessary for breeders to cross-bred the breed with some similar local ones. These efforts, eventually brought back the breed’s numbers, thus revived the breed, by the middle of the 20th century. The UKC (United Kennel Club) recognized the South Russian Ovcharka in 1996 and classified the breed within the Herding Dog Group. A bit later, in 2009, the breed’s name was changed to South Russian Shepherd Dog.
